PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multibeam scanning optical system capable of obtaining a good beam pitch and capable of suppressing the occurrence of an abnormal image such as an image of uneven density.
SOLUTION: The multibeam scanning optical system is provided with a pair of light sources and several pairs of coupling lenses, and the system satisfies the following expressions; 12.7<(D×β0×m0×dpi)/(2×NA)<38.1 and β0=(β+-β-)/(n-1), wherein β+ denotes the principal light inclination of a beam positioned closer to a (+) side in a subscanning direction out of two beams having the largest inclination angle difference in the subscanning direction among several beams passing through the coupling lenses, β- denotes the principal light inclination of the beam positioned closer to a (-) side in the subscanning direction out of two beams having the largest inclination angle difference in the subscanning direction among several beams passing through the coupling lenses, D denotes the aperture diameter in the main scanning direction, NA denotes an effective NA (numerical aperture) to D, m0 denotes the subscanning lateral magnification of the whole system, dpi denotes the number of dots per inch, (n) denotes the number of pairs of the light sources and the coupling lenses.
