PURPOSE: To provide a multicolor printer having a simple construction, suitable for reducing size, printing at a high speed and for other purposes and inexpensive, by a method wherein the color of a molten ink on a multicolor ink ribbon is changed by adjusting the heating value of a heat transfer head.
CONSTITUTION: The multicolor ink ribbon 1 provided with hot-melting inks coated in a plurality of layers is pressed against a recording paper 3 by the heat transfer head 2. In the head 2, heating elements to be driven are preliminarily designated by a pattern signal, and a driving signal from a power source circuit 8 is impressed on the head 2 to drive the heating elements with desired impressed voltage, impressing period and pattern. In the ribbon 1, the inks different from each other in color and melting point are coated on a base film 10 in the condition of a plurality of laminated layers. In this case, the ink layer closer to the base film 10 comprises a binder having a higher melting point so that the ink layer on the outer side is melted earlier when the heating temperature of the head is raised.
