PURPOSE: To obtain a crosslinking compd. which is a low toxicity oligomeric material having no mutagenicity and useful for adhesives, etc., by bringing an isocyanate, etc., into reaction under conditions forming carbodiimido functional groups and then allowing the residual NCO groups to react with a specified product.
CONSTITUTION: A diisocyanate, a hydrophilic diol or diamine and a monoisocyanate as an optional component are brought into reaction under conditions forming carbodiimido functional groups and the reaction is maintained until the desired wt.% of NCO is attained in a reactive medium. The residual NCO groups are then allowed to react with a product contg. at least one reactive proton and at least one reactive functional group other than a carbodiimido functional group to obtain the objective crosslinking compd. When 2-10 wt.% of the compd. is added to a soln., dispersion or emulsion of a polymer and casting is carried out, a film is formed.
