To enable a user to positively confirm a desired title of music without correctly storing the title of music by converting the combined information of sound pitch and length into a character string, displaying at least part of the melody of music as the character string using the characters, and decoding the inputted character string into the combination of sound pitch and length to play the melody.

A music reproducing device is provided with a character input device, a storage device 2, a program list 7 and a decoding part 6. In the program list 7, melody at the beginning of music serving as a part of the melody of the music in correspondence with a title of the music is displayed as a character string corresponding to the pitch and length of each sound constituting the melody. In the decoding part 6, the character string inputted through the character input device 1 is converted into information of sound pitch and length, and sound is reproduced on the basis of this information to play the melody. A user can therefore confirm the melody at the beginning of the music audio- visually and conform the title of the music positively by input-operating the character string started in the program list 7.
