PURPOSE: To provide a new compound exhibiting excellent antimicrobial action against various phytopathogens and useful as an agricultural and horticultural fungicide free from phytotoxicity.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (X, Y and Z are H, halogen, alkoxy or 1-6C lower alkyl; W is thiomethyl, cyclohexyl, trifluoromethyl or butyl), e.g. N-2-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)ethyl-N-4-methylthiobenzylamine. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a phenol of formula II with a dibromoalkane of the formula BrCH2CH2Br in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with an amine of formula IV in the presence of a hydrogen bromide acceptor. The compound is useful for the control of blight such as canker of citrus, bacterial leaf blight of rice, bacterial shot hole of peach, black rot of cabbage, bacterial leaf spot of lettuce, bacterial leaf spot of melon, bacterial pustule of soybean, bacterial spot of cucumber, bacterial soft rot of Chinese cabbage, bacterial grain rot of rice and bacterial canker of tomato.
