PURPOSE: To prepare a reversible polymer gel which is useful as a protective and consolidating agent for stone materials by mixing a specific elastomeric vinylidene fluoride copolymer with a nonelastomeric (co)polymer.

CONSTITUTION: An elastomeric vinylidene fluoride copolymer of 55-98 wt.% (A) formed from 55-85 mol.% vinylidene fluoride, 15-45 mol.% hexafluoropropene, and 0-30 mol.% tetrafluoroethylene is homogeneously mixed in the presence of a solvent with 2-45 wt.% nonelastomeric polymer (B) selected from among a (co)polymer of 65 mol.% vinylidene fluoride, up to 35 mol.% tetrafluoroethylene, and up to 5 mol.% hexafluoropropene, polyvinyl fluoride, and an acrylic resin having a Tg higher than 50°C. The resulting mixture is caused to gel by keeping it under a mild stirring condition and then under a static condition for 5-30 days.
