PURPOSE: To enantioselectively obtain an S-(ω-1)-hydroxyalkylxanthine having cerebral blood flow increasing action by incubating (ω-1)-oxoalkylxanthine and specified microorganisms.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of the formula [where R1-R3 are each CH3-CO-(CH2)m [(m) is 2-6] or a 1-6C alkyl, one of them is CH3-CO-(CH2)4-, R2 is CH3 and R3 is CH3-O-CH2] and Rhodotorula-rubra-DSM-5436 and its mutant and variant are incubated to enantioselectively prepare the objective S-(ω-1)- hydroxyalkylxanthine. The microbiologically obtd. S-(+)-enantiomer is converted into the corresponding R-(-)-enantiomer in the state of its carboxylic ester by treatment with a tert. phosphine, a carboxylic acid and a dialkyl azodicarboxylate in an aprotic solvent and the R-(-)-enantiomer is obtd. by solvolysis.
