PURPOSE: To improve the wear resistance and visibility in the case of rain for a water-repellent glass by forming a metal oxide film phase wherein water- repellent fine particles are dispersed on the surface of a glass substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Tetraethoxysilane and ethanol are mixed to obtain a first soln. The water-repellent fine particles (having 0.1μm mean particle diameter, for example) of polyethylene tetrafluoride, etc., are added to the aq. soln. of fluorine-based surfactant and mixed, and hydrochloric acid is mixed into the obtained dispersion to obtain a second soln. The second soln. is then added to the first soln. and mixed, and the mixture is aged to obtain a coating soln. The film of the coating soln. is then formed on the glass substrate by dipping, the film is roasted to form a water-repellent layer 2 consisting of an SiO2 phase 21 and the water-repellent particles 22 which are dispersed in the phase 21 by 10-40vol.% on the glass substrate 1 surface. Thus, the objective water- repellent glass is produced.
