PURPOSE: To simply produce the subject compound useful as a key synthetic intermediate for HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor by reducing a heptenoic acid ester derivative in an alcohol solvent in the presence of a phenol by using metal magnesium.
CONSTITUTION: A (1S, 2S, 4aR, 6S, 8S, 8aS, 3'R)-3'-oxy-7'-[1, 2, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8aoctahydro-2-mehtyl-8-oxy-6-[(E)-1-propenyl]-1-naphthalenyl]-5'oxo-6'-hEptenoic acid ester derivative of formula I[R1 is H or 1-7C alkanoyl; R2 is H or OH- protecting group; R3 is 1-5C alkyl, (substituted)alkyl or (substituted)aryl] is reduced with metal magnesium in an alcohol solvent in the presence of a phenol (preferably 2, W6-dichlorophenol) to give a compound of fomula II. The compound of formula II is useful as a key synthetic intermediate for HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor of formula III.
