PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high wear resistance and low stickiness by forming a back coat layer with a binder contg. a vinyl chloride copolymer having epoxy groups and carbon black dispersed in the binder.
CONSTITUTION: A back coat layer is composed of a vinyl chloride copolymer having epoxy groups and carbon black contg. ≤500ppm, in total, of extracted ions of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. Since hydrochloric acid is hardly liberated from the vinyl chloride copolymer and the amt. of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals held by the carbon black is small, inorg. crystals are hardly formed in the back coat layer. Excellent friction reducing effect, antistatic effect and wear resistance are ensured, white powder does not deposit on the surface of the back coat layer while the layer is allowed to stand and the running performance and durability of the objective magnetic recording medium with the back coat layer are improved.
