PURPOSE: To provide a new compound useful as a component for ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions or as a precursor monomer material for ferroelectric liquid crystal polymers.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [A, B are 1,4-phenylene, 2,5-pyridine, 2,5-pyrimidine, 2,5-pyrazine, 3,6-pyridazine, 4,4'-diphenyl, 5-(2-phenylpiperidine), 2-(5-phenylpyridine), 2,6-naphthalene, 2,6-quinoline, 2,6-quinoxaline, 2,6-quinazoline, or either of A and B is single bond; X1 to X3 are H, lower alkyl; R1 is halogen- substituted 1-20C alkyl or halogen-substituted 2-20C alkoxyalkyl; X is CH2CH2, CH=CH, C≡C, single bond; n is 0-6; q is 1-5; p, s are 0, 1], e.g. (-)-5-(7- octenyloxy)-2-(4-(6-ethoxy-1-heptyl)phenyl)pyrimidine. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III (Y is halogen, OSO2R3) in the presence of a basic catalyst.
