PURPOSE: To provide a novel improvement type apparatus capable of preventing the osmosis of moisture in a cable containing a plurality of conductors and a method therefor.
CONSTITUTION: The cable 10, such as an optical fiber cable, includes a plurality of the conductors 12 which are twisted together. A tape 24 attached with a powder material layer 26 of a superabsorbent on its surface is wrapped around the circumferences of the plural conductors. An armor 20 is mounted on the outside surface of the tape. If water leakage occurs, a powder material 26 of the superabsorbent absorbs moisture and expands to block further entry of the moisture into the cable. The tape is formed by applying an adhesive layer 34 to a strip 22 of flexible material. The adhesive is applied in a helical pattern which is spaced from the longitudinal edges of the tape. The powder material of the superabsorbent is applied to the adhesive. A suction head 86 removes the excess absorbent powder material from the tape. The tape is wrapped around the conductors of the cable.
