PURPOSE: To suppress the coloration of the black and white display of the liquid crystal display device to obtain a large contrast by optimizing the value of the angle θ formed by the liquid crystal molecule orientation axis on a counter substrate side and the optical axis of a phase difference plate and the value of the twist angle of the liquid crystal molecules.
CONSTITUTION: The product d.Δn of the cell thickness d and refractive index anisotropy Δn of a liquid crystal layer 40 is set at 0.68 to 0.72 value, the retardation Re of the phase difference plate 3 at 650 to 690nm value, the angle a formed by the crystal molecule orientation axis 6 on the counter substrate 4a side and a polarizing plate 2 disposed the counter substrate 4a side at -5 to 15° value, the angle β formed by the crystal molecule orientation axis 7 on the base substrate 4b side and the polarizing plate 5 on the base substrate 4b side at 40 to 60° value. The value of the twist angle of the liquid crystal molecules is set at 240 to 260° value, by which the coloration of the black and white display is suppressed and the high contrast is obtd.
