PURPOSE: To prevent the lowering of impact resistance by constituting the outermost layer of the cutting edge part of a tool with Al2O3,, and the outermost layer of the parts other than the cutting edge with either TiN or TiCN.
CONSTITUTION: On the surface of the base material of a tool consisting of a hard material such as Wc-Co cemented carbide, a single or a plurality of hard layer or layers 2 consisting of at least a kind of compound selected out of the carbide, nitride, and carbonitride of the metal in the 4a to 6b groups of the periodic table of the elements, and Al2O3 are coated. And the outermost layer 4 of the cutting edge part 3 of the tool is made up of Al2O3 by means of the chemical vapor-phase growth method, and the outermost layer 6 other than the cutting edge part 3 is made up of TiN or TiNC. And, the surface roughness of the cutting edge part 3 is set to be 0.4μm or less.
