PURPOSE: To facilitate expedite and rationalize the recovery operation at the time of using out paper and in the case of not mounting a corresponding paper feed tray when assigned paper size or a paper feed means.

CONSTITUTION: When used a paper feed means except a hand insertion paper feed means, in the case that paper in use of the paper feed means is detected to be used out, the paper feed means in use is switched to the hand insertion paper feed means. Thereafter, when paper is detected to be supplied to the paper feed means before used, the hand insertion paper feed means is automatically reset thereto, and printing is continued. When assigned a paper size for use or a paper feed means, even in the case that a corresponding paper feed tray is not mounted, the paper feed means in use is switched to the hand insertion paper feed means.
