PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal composition showing a nematic phase in a wide temp. range in the vicinity of a room temp., by adding a phenylcyclohexane type compound, an ester type compound and a biphenylcyclohexane type compound to a biphenyl type compound.
CONSTITUTION: To a biphenyl type compound shown by the formula I (wherein R1 is a 2W8C straight-chain alkyl or a straight-chain alkoxy), a phenylcyclohexane type compound shown by the formula II (wherein R2 is a 1W8C straight-chain alkyl), an ester type compound shown by the formula III (wherein R3, R4 are a 1W8C straight- chain alkyl or a straight-chain alkoxy) and a biphenylcyclohexane type compound shown by the formula IV (wherein R5 is n-C5H11) are added. It is not pref. for R1 to be C9 or higher in a compound of the formula I, because viscosity of the liquid crystal composition becomes high and response property becomes bas as well as transition from a namatic phase to another phase occurs easily.
