To produce the subject compound on an industrial scale on the basis of a means capable of achieving the conversion of an easily available raw material into thrombin in the absence of thromboplastin by treating a prothrombin-containing aqueous solution with glycerol.
This method for activating prothrombin into thrombin comprises treating a prothrombin-containing aqueous solution with glycerol preferably in the presence of a calcium salt (for example, calcium chloride, calcium hydroxide or calcium acetate) preferably at 4-37°C, more preferably 10-25°X. The prothrombin-containing aqueous solution is preferably 'a prothrombin complex' or 'an aqueous solution containing the prothrombin and the blood coagulation factor X as main components', and is obtained, for example, by a method comprising treating plasma with an anion exchanger to prepare the prothrombin complex.
