Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new catalyst comprising a cobaltic salt and a ferric salt in a specific proportion, including acid components such as acetic acid, propionic acid, naphthenic acid, adipic acid, phthalic acid or the like of the salt, and useful for the production of a carboxylic acid by the oxidation of a hydrocarbon.
CONSTITUTION: The objective new catalyst which comprises 70-99 wt.% cobaltic salt and 1-30 wt.% ferric salt, in which acetic acid, propionic acid, naphthenic acid, adipic acid, phthalic acid or the like are included as acid components of the salt, and on which a carboxylic acid is produced by oxidizing a hydrocarbon with oxygen or air in high selectivity is obtained by reacting a mixture of 70-99 wt.% proper cobaltous salt and 1-30 wt.% proper ferrous salt with the oxygen or the air in the presence of an initiator (e.g. cyclohexanone) in a solvent comprising a 2-4C aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid) or a mixture thereof at a temperature within the range of 60-150°C under a pressure within the range of 1-50 kg/cm2 for 0.25-8 hr.
