To obtain a new cholesteric liquid crystalline compound preferable for the use in a heat-sensitive recording medium, and further to provide a method for producing the compound, a liquid crystal composition containing the liquid crystalline compound, and the heat-sensitive recording medium using the liquid crystal composition.

This new cholesteric liquid crystalline compound is represented by general formula (IA). The compound can be synthesized by the condensation or the like of a prescribed cholesteryl ester derivative with a dicarboxylic acid.
