To obtain a new compound effective for protecting plastics from UV without preventing other properties such as transparency which thermoplastic substrates have and capable of relatively simply producing.
This compound is represented by the formula (Ar1 and Ar2 are each an aryl; R is H, an aryl, etc.; A is a group derived from an alcohol, an aryl, etc.), e.g. 2-(acetoxymethyl)-4,6-dibenzoylresolcinol. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting (A) a mixture of 4,6-dibenzoylresolcinol with para-aldehyde (e.g. para-formaldehyde) in the presence of a secondary amine catalyst such as diethylamine in an amount of about <20 mol.%, preferably <10 mol.% based on 1 mol component A in a carboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid) solvent at ≥80°C reaction temperature to afford a methylenecarboxylate intermediate to which dibenzoylresolcinol residue, etc., is linked and then, reacting the resultant intermediate with an alcohol, etc., in a reactive solvent at about 20°C to about 120°C.
