To obtain the subject chemically stable new compound large in elasticity constant ratio, low in viscosity, and excellent in low-temperature compatibility.
This new compound is shown by the formula (R1 is H, cyano, a halogen, 1-20C alkyl or the like; R2 is H, a halogen, 1-9C alkyl or the like; R3 is H or a halogen; X1 to X3 are each CH2CH2, CO-O or the like; rings A to D are each 1,4-phenylene ring, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene ring or the like; (l) and (m) are each 0 or 1; (n) is 1-5), e.g. 4 [(1E,5E)-1,5,9-decatrienyl]-4'- methylbicyclohexane. This new compound is obtained by the following process: an aldehyde is reacted with a compound bearing non-conjugated trans-polyenyl group followed by oxidation to form the corresponding epoxide which, in turn, is reacted with triphenylphosphine dibromide to form the corresponding bromide which is then recrystallized to eliminate unnecessary isomer(s) followed by carrying out a reduction with metallic zinc or the like.
