Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new microorganism capable of decomposing not only polycyclic aromatic compounds in a crude oil component such as kerosine and toluene but also tar component of crude oil and exhibiting crude oil decomposition capability in seawater and, accordingly, useful for the removal of marine- polluting substance.
CONSTITUTION: New microorganism belonging to the genus Moraxella and capable of decomposing crude oil, i.e., Moraxella sp. KE-2991 (FERM P-12908). The microorganism is separable from the seawater in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. The temperature for the decomposition of crude oil with the microorganism is preferably set to 20-30°C.
