Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain incombustible and semi-incombustible marble by formulating granular filler of a specific composition, an endothermic metal hydroxide and a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin.
CONSTITUTION: A metal hydroxide which cause an endothermic reaction of a high calorie on its thermal decomposition is mixed with a small amount of an inorganic binder and pelletized, heated at about 110°C, crushed so that the ratio of crude particles of more than 1 mm sizes and middle particles of less than 1mm sizes reaches a certain value to prepare a particular filter. The resultant filler, fine particles of endothermic metal hydroxide and a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin are formulated to give the objective artificial marble. In the resultant composite material, the endothermic metal hydroxide amounts to more than 95wt.%, thus the endothermic calorie of 95wt.% hydroxide exceeds the exothermic calorie by combustion of 5wt.% of the resin, and the flame retardancy is improved to enable the production of incombustible or flame-retardant composite materials.
