A placement portion on which a barcode reader 1 is to be set is formed on a charger 2, and the power transmission coil 8 to be electromagnetically coupled with a power reception coil 6 in the barcode reader 1 is installed under the placement portion. The charger 2 and the barcode reader 1 are provided with respective transmitting-receiving portions 11 and 13 which conduct two-way communication by light. The barcode reader 1 is provided with a capacity judging means which judges the capacity of a loaded secondary battery 4. The recognizing portion 12 of the charger 2 outputs a response request signal. When receiving the response request signal, the recognizing portion 14 of the barcode reader 1 transmits recognition information including battery capacity information to the charger 2. When receiving the recognition information, the charger 2 issues a command to and causes a charge control portion 9 to charge the secondary battery with charging current corresponding to the battery capacity information.
