Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery superior in cycle characteristics, which is arranged so as to suppress the formation of a lithium compound in an amorphous silicon oxide phase at charging the battery, and the volume expansion and shrinkage of crystal Si accompanying the repetition of charging and discharging the battery.SOLUTION: A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery negative electrode active material comprises an amorphous compound including at least silicon, oxygen, and a metal M selected from elements of Groups III to XIV, lanthanoids and actinoids. The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery negative electrode active material has an average particle diameter of 0.1-20 μm. Supposing that in the negative electrode active material, the content of the silicon is x atom%, the content of the oxygen is y atom%, and the content of the metal M is z atom%, and the average valence of the element M is d, the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery negative electrode active material satisfies the following formulas (1) and (2): x+y+z=100, (2+d)z<200+(d-2)x (1); and (d-4)z>6y-400 (2).
