In a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, where a lithium containing composite oxide can be used as positive electrode active material, and carbon material, capable of doping and dedoping lithium, can be used as negative electrode active material; a compound, expressed in a formula LiwNixCoyMzO2, is used as a lithium containing composite oxide. In the formula, M: at least one kind element selected from Zr and lanthanoid elements, w, x, y, and z: numbers satisfying all following expressions, 0.05≤w≤1.10, 0.5≤x≤0.995, y≤0.495, 0.005≤z≤0.20, x+y+z≥1.
