To improve battery performance such as reliability or cycle characteristics, even if power is discharged up to a deep discharge depth by setting a battery capacitance of a positive electrode to be greater than that of a negative electrode.
As a negative electrode of a battery, a carbon material capable of forming an inter-layer compound is employed electrochemically. This carbon material maintains its layer-shaped structure and is stable, even if a deep discharge depth such that all light metals forming the inter-layer compound are evacuated is set. Battery discharging is terminated by utilizing this behavior. As a carbon material, for example, a carbon body having a random layer structure slightly than carbon consisting of a graphite structure highly oriented, which is formed of a hydrocarbon compound such as benzene by an air phase deposition method, using low temperature thermal decomposition of 1,500°C or lower, the carbon body consisting essentially of carbon having a selective orientation structure. Thereby, a battery governed by a negative electrode, in which the capacitance of the negative electrode is lower than that of the positive electrode is provided.
