PURPOSE: The titled emulsion, useful as a raw material for a fiber paste suppressing stain deposition, which is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid by use of a combination of a polyvinyl alcohol or a hydroxyethyl cellulose and a cationic starch.

CONSTITUTION: In the emulsion polymerization of 99.5W90wt% vinyl acetate and 0.5W10wt% crotonic acid, each based on the total monomer, the titled emulsion is obtained, by use of about 3W15pts.wt., based on 100pts.wt total monomer, polyvinyl alcohol having a viscosity of 3W70m Pas in a 4% aqueous solution at 20°C and an ester value of 0W170mgKOH/g and/or a hydroxyethyl cellulose having a viscosity of 5,000W5m Pas in a 2% aqueous solution at 25°C, and a cationic starch. The cationic starch is preferably one of the formula (wherein X is starch residue; R is alkylene, etc.; R1, R2 and R3 are H, alkylene, etc.), in which a quaternary ammonium is added to the starch residue.
