NEW MATERIAL:4-Methylumbelliferyl-tetra-N-acetyl-β-chitotetraoside shown by the formulaI. Having the following physical and chemical properties. Molecular formula: C42H60N4O23.1/2 H2O. Molecular weight: 997.95 (theoretical value). Melting point: 288W289°C. Specific rotatory power: [α]28=-17.4° (C=0.78, DMSO). Soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, in soluble other organic solvents. Stable, tasteless, odorless white powder crystal.

USE: A reagent for measuring lysozyme activity.

PROCESS: A tridecaacetyl-chitotetraocyl halogenide shown by the formula II (X is halogen) is reacted with 4-methylumbelliferone shown by the formula III in a solvent such as DMF, etc. in the presence of a base at room temperature, and the reaction product is subjected to removal of O-acetyl group by alcoholysis, etc.
