Abstract:

To provide nucleic acid compositions encoding a unique colorless protein from Aequorea coerulscens and fluorescent and non-fluorescent mutants thereof, as well as the proteins and peptides encoded by the nucleic acids.

There are provided: the nucleic acid compositions encoding a colorless GFP-like protein (acGFP) from Aequorea coerulscens, and the fluorescent and non-fluorescent mutants and derivatives thereof; and the proteins and peptides encoded by these nucleic acid composites. The proteins, or proteins encoded by the nucleic acid compositions, are colored and/or fluorescent and/or can be photoactivated. Accordingly, the proteins can be used in a variety of different biological applications, particularly for labeling. Further, kits for use in such biological applications are provided.
