To obtain a fluoro azo compound useful to introduce a fluoro segment into the desired position (terminal) of a polymer by adopting a specified molecular structure as its structure.
This compound is represented by the formula (wherein R1 and R3, which are independent of each other, are lower alkyls; R2 and R4, which are independent of each other, are lower alkyls or cyano groups; A1 and A2, which are independent of each other, are lower alkylenes interrupted by an oxygen atom and/or an aromatic ring; Z1 and Z2, which are independent of each other, are ester bonds or amide bonds; T1 and T2, which are independent of each other, are -CONH groups or valance bonds; Q and Q', which are independent of each other, are fluoro segmets; and Rf1 and Rf2, which are independent of each other, are fluoroalykyls. A fluoropolymer terminated with a fluoro segment can be obtained by polymerizing a monomer (e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate or acrylic acid) in the presence of a polymerization initiator being the fluoro azo compound optionally in combination with a common radical polymerization initiator.
