Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 1W20C alkyl, alkenyl or perfluoroalkyl; Q* is optically active group).

EXAMPLE: (S)-2-Methylbutyl-4'-decanoyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate.

USE: An optical switch element for display which is a liquid crystal substance having ferroelectricity and particularly high-speed responsiveness and memory property, stable to light, water, etc., and capable of assuming chiral smectic C phase even within a low temperature region near room temperature.

PREPARATION: An acid chloride expressed by the formula R.COCl is condensed with an optically active 2-methylbutyl 4'-hydroxybiphenylcarboxylate expressed by formula II in the presence of a base, e.g. pyridine, to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
