PURPOSE: To provide an additive which comprises a specified ethylene/alpha- olefin polymer substituted with a (di)carboxylic acid forming component, is useful as an additive for lubricating oil, and has good dispersibility.
CONSTITUTION: An intended additive useful for a fuel composition and having a VR value of at least 4.1 which contains an ethylene/alpha-olefin polymer which contains (A) a monomer unit which is derived from (i) ethylene and (ii) alpha-olefin of a formula H2C=CHT1 (T1 is 1-18 C alkyl) and (B) is substituted with (iii) a 3-10 C monounsaturated monocarboxylic acid forming component and/or (iv) a 4-10C monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid forming component and in which at least 30% on average of polymer chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation.
