NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI(R is H or acetyl).
EXAMPLE: 2R, 3S, 22R, 23R-Tetrahydroxy-24S-ethyl-B-homo-7-oxa-5α-cholestan-6- one.
USE: A plant growth promotor capable of promoting the growth of rice plants, soybeans, AZUKI beans, vegetables or fruits, shortening the harvesting period, and improving the yield and quality without giving the phytotoxicity.
PROCESS: A novel compound of formula II and an acetylated derivative thereof are subjected to the Bayer-Villiger reaction, and if necessary the reaction product is hydrolyzed with KOH, NaOH, etc. to give the aimed compound of formulaI. The use of trifluoroperacetic acid as an oxidizing agent is particularly advantageous to the Bayer-Villiger reaction. The compound of formula II is obtained by epoxidizing the compound of formula III with an organic peroxide, reacting the resultant 22,23-oxide of formula IV with hydrobromic acid, opening the epoxy ring of the resultant compound under solvolytic conditions, and if necessary acetylating the solvolytic product.
