NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [A is group of formula II or III (R3 and R5 are H or acyl; R4 and R6 are H or halogen); R1 is H, OH or acyloxy; R2 is alkyl] excluding the compound wherein the group A is group of formula II, R1 is OH, R2 is methyl, R3 is H and R4 is H.

EXAMPLE: 8-Bromoadenosine-3',5'-cyclic methylphosphonate.

USE: An antidemential agent.

PREPARATION: A nucleoside of formula IV (A1 is adenine or guanine; R11 is H or tetrahydropyranyloxy) is made to react with an alkyl-O,O-bis-(1- benzotriazolyl)phosphonate of formula V and the reaction product is added with a 1-alkylimidazole to obtain a cyclic derivative of formula VI. As necessary, the tetrahydropyranyl group is eliminated by reacting with an acid.
