PURPOSE: To read a numerical value of many digits, which is brought to a pattern display, exactly and instantaneously by providing a color filter on a display pattern of a code, a symbol, etc. for showing a quality of the numerical value.
CONSTITUTION: When an external light which has been made incident from the front side of a liquid crystal display element 12 is made incident on a light reflecting plate 14 by transmitting through a color filter 15 (15b, 15g and 15r), an upper polarizing plate 13a, an upper substrate 5, a liquid crystal 11, a lower substrate 6 and a lower polarizing plate 13b, it is reflected by this light reflecting plate 14, and this reflected transmission light transmits successively through the lower polarizing plate 13b, the lower substrate 6, the liquid crystal 11, the upper substrate 5, the upper polarizing plate 13a and the color filter 15, and reflected in the direction of an observer. In this case, between a segment electrode 7 and a common electrode 8, a prescribed voltage is impressed, and when a numerical value 1234567890 as shown in the figure is brought to a pattern display, this numerical value 890 is displayed in red, the numerical value 567 is displayed in blue, the numerical value 234 is displayed in green, and the numerical value 1 is displayed in black.
