PURPOSE: To easily count objects in a picture by extracting small areas including the objects in the picture by a mask, and projecting the concentration of the areas on the X-axis or Y-axis.
CONSTITUTION: An objective area extracting 3 prepares a picture 23 being an objective area extracting result in which the concentration of the areas except for the objective areas of an input picture 21 inputted from a picture inputting part 1, is made into 0 by using a mask picture 22 stored in a mask picture storing part 2. Successively, a concentration projecting part 4 projects the concentration of the picture 23 obtained by the objective area extracting part 3 on the X-axis direction(or the Y-axis direction). Then, an object counting part 5 projects the concentration of the objective area in the picture on the X-axis or the Y-axis, and measures the length of a section on the X-axis or the Y-axis, having the concentration more or less than a constant value, so that the objects can be counted. Thus, the objects in the picture are counted by only simple in-picture operation and an arithmetical operation.
