The oil retaining hard porous carbon material is formed by using a material mixture containing a cellulosic material and a thermosetting resin, then molding the material mixture and firing the molding to form the hard porous carbon material and impregnating a plurality of pores of the hard porous carbon material with a lubricant. The parts constituting the friction contact segments of machines or sewing machines are formed by using the oil retaining hard porous carbon material.
