Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new optically active compound useful as an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material having excellent high-speed response and three stable molecule arrangement states, showing chiral smectic CA phase, especially useful as display element.
CONSTITUTION: An optically active compound of formula I (R1 is 1-20C alkyl or alkoxy; R2 is 1-12C alkyl; (n) is 4-12) such as (R)-4'--undecyloxybiphenyl-4- carboxylic acid-3-fluoro-4-(1-trifluoromethyl-5-methoxypentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl ester. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III to give a compound of formula VI and then reacting this compound with a compound of formula V.
