Abstract:
To provide an optical amplifier and an optical amplification method, with which it is possible to shut off forward and backward excitation light, even when the forward excitation light has a wide bandwidth that includes the backward excitation light.SOLUTION: The optical amplification device comprises a first Raman amplifier for amplifying signal light with forward excitation light, and a second Raman amplifier for amplifying signal light with backward excitation light, the first wavelength band of forward excitation light including the second wavelength band of backward excitation light and being wider than the second wavelength band. The first Raman amplifier includes a first optical filter for shutting off the second wavelength band, a first detection unit for detecting the power of first transmitted light of the first optical filter, the second Raman amplifier includes a second optical filter for shutting off the second wavelength band, and a second detection unit for detecting the power of second transmitted light of the second optical filter. The first Raman amplifier stops output of forward excitation light when the power of first transmitted light is higher than a first threshold, and the second Raman amplifier stops output of backward excitation light when the power of second transmitted light has decreased.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
