Abstract:
PURPOSE: To suppress degradation in a light signal level by feeding exciting light as it is into an optical amplifier medium and feeding signal light to the optical amplifier medium of the ensuing stage after passing the signal light through a light signal characteristic compensating section.
CONSTITUTION: The signal light is made incident on a rare earthadded optical fiber 1a through a wavelength multiplex separating section 2 and the exciting light is made incident thereon through a wavelength multiplex separating section 2, by which the signal light is amplified. Next, the signal light is made incident on the rare earth-added optical fiber 1b of the ensuing stage by passing the wavelength multiplex separating section 3, the light signal characteristic compensating section 6 and the wavelength multiplex separating section 3 in this order and the exciting light is made incident thereon by passing only the wavelength multiplex separating section 3, by which the signal light is amplified again. Namely, only the signal light receives loss in the light signal characteristic compensating section 6 and, therefore, the signal input decreases and the rare earth-added optical fiber 1b nearly attains the non-saturation state, thereby increasing the gain. Then, the loss of the light signal characteristic compensating section 6 is compensated by the rare earth-added optical fiber 1b and the gain when the entire part of the optical amplifier A01 is viewed is prevented from being decreased by as much as the loss-component of the light signal characteristic compensating section 6 as compared with the absence of such loss.
