The optical connector 10 holds a flat type optical waveguide 14 having a plurality of cores arrayed in parallel and having a clad surrounding the plurality of cores. The optical connector includes: a connector body 12 formed from synthetic resin; an optical waveguide inserting port for inserting the flat type optical waveguide; an optical waveguide insertion passage which is in communication with the optical waveguide inserting port and which is for inserting the flat type optical waveguide; and an optical waveguide exposure part 22 which is in communication with the optical waveguide insertion passage to expose the tip end of the flat type optical waveguide. The optical connector includes: an engaging projection 38 that is installed in the optical waveguide exposure part, that is formed projecting in a direction nearly orthogonal to the inserting direction of the flat type optical waveguide from the passage bottom face of the optical waveguide insertion passage, and that engages with the flat type optical waveguide to position it in the connector body; and an engaging groove 40 that is installed in the tip end face of the flat type optical waveguide, that is formed in the shape of a groove in the direction nearly orthogonal to the optical axis direction of the flat type optical waveguide, in the clad between the adjacent cores in the plurality of cores, and that is engaged with the engaging projection.
