Abstract:

PURPOSE: To decrease DC drifts and maintain characteristics stably over a long period by specifying the concn. of the hydrogen atoms or hydrogen ions in a dielectric crystal substrate.
CONSTITUTION: The lithium niobate crystal substrate 1 is heated at ≥600°C in a vacuum to thermally diffuse the metal and to form optical waveguides 2, 3. Namely, the concn. of the hydrogen atoms or the hydrogen ions in the lithium niobate crystal substrate 1 decreases to ≤1×1019cm-3. The two optical waveguides 2, 3 approach each other in the central part of the substrate 1 to constitute a direction coupler 4. Control electrodes 5 are formed via a buffer layer 6 thereon. Namely, the hydrogen ions or hydrogen atoms of ≥3×1019cm-3 are incorporated into the conventional lithium niobate crystal substrate and the hydrogen ions are polarized by the electric impressed from the outside, by which the DC drifts are generated. Then, the DC drifts are decreased and the characteristics are stabilized by lowering the concn. of the hydrogen ions.
