When a loaded disk is discriminated as a hybrid next-generation DVD, a DVD layer is reproduced by a red laser beam (S102, S103). In parallel to such reproduction processing, processing for informing existence of a HDDVD layer is performed (S120, S121). That is, it is discriminated whether it reaches the prescribed information timing or not (S120). And when it reaches the information timing (S120:Y), a control command is output from a controller 106 to an AV processing circuit 108, and picture information including a picture for informing existence of the HDDVD layer is output from the AV processing circuit 108 to a display apparatus 200. Thereby, existence of the HDDVD layer is informed to a user.
