PURPOSE: To decrease the loss of the light and to improve the reflecting ratio by opposing one side surface of a pair of substrates mutually, connecting to the orientating processing surface between substrates and having the ferroelectric liquid crystal with the non-volatile memory action.
CONSTITUTION: The optical disk has a pair of opposing substrates 3 and substrates 7, one side opposing substrates 3 are translucent, a layer 6 has a reflection characteristic and further, to the inner surface close to the pair of ferroelectric liquid crystals FLC, the orientating processing, especially, a non- symmetrical orientating processing is executed. Namely, to one side inner surface, the orientating processing is executed, the non-orientating processing is executed, and further, an FLC 5 is charged between them. The periphery of the optical disk is sealed 30 and 30' so that the FLC may not contact with the air. To the optical disk 10, the voltage is directly impressed so that the prescribed electric field can be distributed for the FLC from a high pressure generating source 25 from the external part to a pair of electrodes 31 and 31'. Thus, the reflecting ratio can be highly kept, the non-volatile characteristic is obtained because of the use of the FLC and the energy saving can be executed.
