Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the display characteristics such as increase in the intensity of the emitted light, improvement in the display contrast and decrease in the scattered light due to external light and to easily produce a large screen by forming a light-controlling layer on the lower face of a planer light transmission plate through a first electrode of a transparent electrode and forming a reflection plate on the lower face of the light-controlling layer through a second electrode of a transparent electrode.
SOLUTION: This optical element consists of a light-controlling layer (liquid crystal layer) 30, transparent electrode 31, transparent electrode 32, light transmission plate 33 deposited on the transparent electrode 31, and reflection plate 34 formed on the lower face of the transparent electrode 32. The reflection plate 34 has an inclined reflection face 35 on the face opposite to the face in contact with the transparent electrode 32. The reflection face 35 is inclined at a specified angle against the light-controlling layer in such a manner that when the incident light 37 is reflected on the reflection face to outgo as the reflected light, total reflection does not occur. When an electric field is applied (b) to the light-controlling layer 30, the light 37 reflected on the interface between the light transmission plate 33 and the air is further reflected on the interface between the transparent electrode 31 and the light-controlling layer 30, resulting in a non-emission state.
