Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a thulium-doped optical fiber amplifier where efficient excitation takes place to a 3F4 level to enhance the amplifier in excitation efficiency.
SOLUTION: This optical fiber amplifier is equipped with first exciting light sources 3a and 3b which generate exciting light of wavelengths 980 to 1080 nm and second exciting light sources 4a and 4b of wavelength 1080 to 1250 nm, 1510 to 2000 nm, or 770 to 840 nm, light rays emitted from the first exciting light sources 3a and 3b and the second exciting light sources 4a and 4b are multiplexed through wavelength division multiplexing couplers 5a and 5b, and the multiplexed light rays and signal light rays are multiplexed through wavelength division multiplexing couplers 6a and 6b and made to impinge on an amplifying optical fiber 1 whose core is loaded with rare earth ion thulium(Tm3+), by which efficient oscillation takes place to a Tm3F4 level.
