To provide a cutting device and method for an optical fiber, that can reduce the cutting work man-hours by cutting the sheath and the glass fibers at the same time.
Holding the front and rear of the cutting position of an optical fiber 10 by using a front clamp 22 and a rear clamp 23, the tension means 24 applies tension to the fiber 10 by energizes the front and rear clamps 22, 23 in the separating direction. Since the sheath 12 and the glass fiber 11 are cut with a cutter blade 31 in this state, the cut surfaces 11a of the glass fiber 11 become smooth. Besides, since the same cutter blade 31 cuts the sheath 12 and makes at least deep cuts on the glass fiber 11, the man-hours can be decreased more than when cutting the glass fiber and the sheath separately by changing the blade as before.
