Abstract:

PURPOSE: To draw a high-quality optical fiber having high strength, low transmission loss, etc., even when a large-diameter perform of optical glass fiber is drawn at a high speed.
CONSTITUTION: When a carbon electric furnace 2 (drawing furnace) is used, the ratio of gaseous argon having a low heat-transfer coefficient to gaseous helium having a high heat-transfer coefficient in the gaseous mixture determined by the outer diameter and drawing speed of an optical fiber glass perform 8 is set in the gaseous argon feed controller 24 and gaseous helium feed controller 26 through an input controller 28. The gaseous mixture having a specified heat-transfer coefficient is formed in a mixer 22 and introduced into the furnace 2. The temp. of molten preform 8 is appropriately controlled at its meniscus by the heat-transfer coefficient of the gaseous mixture introduced into the furnace 2, and an optical fiber 10 is drawn while maintaining a specified length of the solidified part and an appropriate drawing tension.
