To provide an optical fiber which may be produced with simple constitution to the extent equivalent to that of a single mode optical fiber for 1.3 μm at a low cost by reducing bending loss at a use wavelength selected from 1.53 to 1.60 μm and expanding an effective core cross-sectional area.
The effective core cross-sectional area at the use wavelength selected from 1.53 to 1.60 μm of the optical fiber consisting of a central core 1 of a high refractive index and a clad 2 of a low refractive index disposed on its outer periphery and having a unimodal refractive index distribution shape is 100 to 160 μm2 and the bending loss thereof is ≤30 dB/m. In addition, the optical fiber has a cutoff wavelength at which single mode propagation is possible.
